How this used car value estimate works

The calculator starts with the original sticker price—or a comparable new-car price when the original is unknown—and applies a broad age-retention curve. It then compares the odometer with an age-adjusted 12,000-mile-per-year baseline before applying condition and title-history adjustments.

Real market value still depends on make, model, trim, options, service history, accident history, season, and local supply. Consumer Reports notes that high mileage, damage, and reconditioning cost affect value and that no used-car price is exact. That is why the result is a range and the next step is a local comparable check.

Method note: broad depreciation heuristic, 12,000 miles/year neutral baseline, capped mileage adjustment, and explicit condition/title multipliers. Not tax, insurance, lending, or legal advice.

Used car value FAQ

How do I estimate the private-party value of my used car?

Start with the original MSRP or the price of a comparable new model, then adjust for age, mileage, condition, and title history. This calculator makes those adjustments transparently and returns a quick-sale, fair private-party, and patient asking price.

Is this the same as a Kelley Blue Book or VIN appraisal?

No. This is a broad, no-signup estimate that does not know the make, model, trim, options, accident history, or real-time wholesale market. Use it as a starting point, then compare same-trim local listings and a VIN-based valuation before accepting an offer.

How much does mileage change a used car price?

Mileage matters relative to age, not by itself. The calculator uses about 12,000 miles per year as a neutral baseline and adjusts approximately 2.5% for every 10,000 miles above or below that baseline, with a cap so condition and title history still matter.

Should I list at the fair value or the higher asking price?

Use the fair value when you want a realistic starting point and fewer dead-end messages. Use the higher asking price only when your car has excellent documentation, unusually low mileage, recent major maintenance, or a configuration that is scarce locally.

What should I include in a private car listing?

Include year, make, model, trim, mileage, title status, maintenance records, known defects, tire condition, number of keys, and clear photos from every side. Never hide a rebuilt title or a known safety problem.
